Collaboration I

I'm really enjoying this new collaboration with my dear friend Mike at michaelmake.com. I am using watercolor backgrounds with silhouettes on top that I am cutting from bicycle inner tubes. I only give each image a maximum of about 30 minutes, but often end up with a few in that amount of time.

This project was framed as a childrens book collaboration, but we will see what it ends up being! I really love some of these images and can't wait to see where the visual narrative goes from here.

Here are 16 watercolor and ink cards that I made in 2005. I just found them tucked away in my computer. They were originally on the front of notecards, which I then must have scanned. I don't know where any of the originals are.

I gave these paintings to Danni for a gift. The experiment was to make them fit together no matter what configuration you put them in, side to side, the other side to side, top to bottom, or the other top to bottom. This way, they will fit into many different spaces, and make a different completed "picture" depending on how you hang them. Here are the four ways they fit together:

I wanted to give Spencer and Tara a painting for a gift, I think it was a wedding gift?, and I decided to make them two and let them decide which one they wanted. They finally decided that they couldn't decide, and kept both!

Two Beaches

I painted a whole bunch of beaches after I went on my weird trip to Puerto Rico, and I imagine they were inspired by the many beaches that I saw/sat on while I was there. I thought it might be cool to stick two beaches together to make a cool shape, because sometimes you're upside down and sometimes you're sideways, right? - I did this a couple of times but this is my favorite of them.  I also did some very simple bending horizon line paintings, which interestingly end up being a similar shape.

Two Eggs in a Boat

I painted this after a harrowing journey in Chris's boat. A boat is a weird place to be: it makes you feel very vulnerable at the same time that you feel kind of cozy and safe, which to my thinking is probably not so different from how it would feel to be in a warm nest on a swaying tree branch.

If you could somehow travel inside my brain in the winter, I think you would find a scene like this: a pinpoint of spinning colors that are the whole living world (plants, water, etc.) just waiting to come back out and inhabit the world again. Meanwhile, though, things are pretty stark.
